Fiber optic cable reel attenuation

Attenuation in fiber optic cables refers to the loss of light signal strength, which can be influenced by the cable's handling, bending, and tension during storage and deployment from reels.

Understanding Attenuation

Attenuation is the gradual reduction of light intensity as it travels through a fiber optic cable, measured in decibels per kilometer (dB/km). Standard single-mode fiber at 1550 nm typically experiences about 0. 22 dB/km under ideal conditions, while multimode fibers have higher losses at shorter wavelengths.

The main causes of attenuation include: Intrinsic losses: Scattering (Rayleigh scattering) and absorption within the glass itself, which are unavoidable even in perfectly manufactured fibers. Extrinsic losses: Bending losses, microbends, macrobends, and handling stress introduced during installation or storage.

Reel-

Related Factors

When fiber optic cables are wound on reels, several factors can temporarily or permanently affect attenuation: Bending radius: Tight winding on a reel can create macrobends, causing light to escape the core and increasing attenuation. Bend-insensitive fibers reduce this effect but still require adherence to minimum bend radius specifications. Tension and elongation: During manufacturing, fibers are wound with slight tension, causing a relative elongation of about 1% of the fiber length.

Excessive tension during unwinding can stretch the fiber beyond safe limits, increasing attenuation and risking long-term damage. Environmental conditions: Temperature fluctuations and humidity can affect the fiber coating and the cable structure, potentially increasing losses if the cable is stored improperly.

Measuring Attenuation

Attenuation is typically measured using: Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) or Light Source and Power Meter (LSPM) for accurate link attenuation testing at the operational wavelength.

Optical Time-

Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) for identifying localized losses, splices, and bends along the cable. Cutback method for laboratory measurements, where the fiber is shortened and power differences are measured to calculate the loss coefficient.

Best Practices

To minimize reel-related attenuation: Follow the manufacturer's recommended minimum bend radius when winding or unwinding cables. Avoid excessive tension during installation; ensure the fiber is not stretched beyond its designed elongation limits. Use protective sheathing and proper storage to reduce environmental impacts.

Perform attenuation testing after installation to establish a baseline and verify that handling has not introduced excessive loss. By understanding these factors, network designers and installers can ensure that fiber optic cables maintain low attenuation and reliable performance throughout their service life.
