Extinction ratio meter and eye diagram meter

An extinction ratio meter is not an eye diagram; it is a measurement tool that uses the eye diagram to quantify the ratio of optical power between logic '1' and '0' levels.

Understanding Extinction Ratio

The extinction ratio (ER) is a key parameter in optical communications that measures how well a system distinguishes between high (logic '1') and low (logic '0') optical power levels. It is defined as the ratio of the optical power when the light source is on (P1) to the power when it is off (P0), often expressed in linear terms, decibels, or percentages. A higher extinction ratio indicates clearer signal discrimination and lower bit error rates.

Relationship to Eye Diagrams

An eye diagram is a graphical representation of a digital signal's voltage or optical power over time, showing the superposition of multiple bits to visualize signal quality, jitter, and noise. Extinction ratio measurements are typically performed using the eye diagram: the upper and lower levels of the eye are sampled to calculate the mean power of '1' and '0' levels, from which the extinction ratio is derived. Histograms of these levels within the eye window are often used to improve measurement accuracy.

Key Distinction

Eye Diagram: A visual tool showing the overall signal quality, timing, and amplitude variations. Extinction Ratio Meter: A measurement function or instrument that analyzes the eye diagram to compute the extinction ratio, providing a numerical value rather than a visual plot. In summary, while the eye diagram provides the data needed, the extinction ratio meter extracts a specific quantitative metric from it.

They are related but not the same: one is a visualization, the other is a measurement derived from that visualization.
