Branch wires of the distribution box

Branch wires in a distribution box connect the main power supply to individual circuits, ensuring safe and organized electricity distribution.

Overview of Branch Wiring

Branch wires are the conductors that carry electricity from the main circuit breaker or busbar to individual branch circuit breakers, which then supply power to specific loads such as lighting, outlets, or appliances. Proper branch wiring ensures balanced electrical loads, prevents overloads, and allows for safe maintenance.

Wire Connections

Live (L) Wire: Connects from the main supply to the line terminal of each circuit breaker. In single-pole (1P) breakers, only the live wire passes through the breaker, while in double-pole (2P) breakers, both live and neutral wires are controlled. Neutral (N) Wire: For 1P breakers, the neutral bypasses the breaker and connects directly to the neutral busbar.

For 2P breakers, the neutral is connected to the breaker and disconnects simultaneously with the live wire. Protective Earth (PE) Wire: Connects to the ground busbar and, if applicable, to RCD-equipped breakers to provide protection against earth faults.

Wire Specifications and Color Coding

Wire Size: Typically, 2. 5mm² wires are used for lighting and socket circuits, while higher loads like air conditioning may require 4. 0mm² wires.

Color Coding: Standard colors help identify wires: blue for neutral, yellow/green for earth, and red, yellow, or green for phase wires depending on the phase designation.

Wiring Arrangement and Management

Breaker Layout: Arrange breakers from left to right, reserving space on the right for future expansion. Wiring Direction: Incoming wires from the main breaker generally enter from the left, while outgoing branch wires exit on the right. Binding and Organization: Use plastic ties to keep wires straight and organized, ensuring uniform spacing and avoiding tangling.

Busbars: Copper or aluminum busbars distribute power efficiently to all branch breakers, reducing the need for multiple jumper wires.

Safety and Maintenance

Inspection: After wiring, perform a safety check to ensure no short circuits, overloads, or loose connections exist. Protection Devices: Use RCDs or circuit breakers to protect against overloads, short circuits, and earth faults. Accessibility: Properly organized branch wires allow easy maintenance, troubleshooting, and future expansion.

Summary

Branch wires are essential for distributing electricity safely from the main supply to individual circuits. Correct wire sizing, color coding, breaker selection, and organized routing within the distribution box are critical for safety, efficiency, and compliance with electrical standards.

North American distribution boards are generally housed in sheet metal enclosures, with the circuit breakers positioned in two columns operable from the front. Some panelboards are provided with a door covering the breaker switch handles, but all are constructed with a dead front; that is to say the front of the enclosure (whether it has a door or not) prevents the operator of the circuit breakers from contacting live electrical parts within. Busbars carry the current from incoming line (hot) conductors to the breakers
