Installation Requirements for Mesh Cable Trays

Mesh cable trays require proper support spacing, tray-rated cables, grounding, fill limits, and environmental considerations to ensure safe and code-compliant installation.

Cable Types and Ratings

Only tray-rated cables (Type TC, MC, or other NEC-approved conductors) should be installed in mesh cable trays to withstand open-air conditions, heat, and mechanical stress. For outdoor or sunlight-exposed installations, use UV-resistant cables to prevent degradation.

Support and Spacing

Mesh cable trays must be fully supported according to manufacturer specifications. Standard trays typically require supports every 6 to 10 feet, while heavy-duty or long-span trays can extend up to 20 feet between supports. Unsupported spans when transitioning to equipment should not exceed 6 feet, and additional supports are required for longer spans.

Fill Capacity and Separation

Power cables: Fill must not exceed 40% of the tray's cross-sectional area. Control or communication cables: Fill must not exceed 50%. Separation: High-power and low-power cables should be separated to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Grounding and Bonding

Metallic mesh trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors (EGC) if they meet NEC requirements. Proper bonding and grounding are mandatory to ensure electrical safety.

Environmental and Mechanical Considerations

Mesh cable trays are suitable for ambient temperatures from -20°C to +120°C. They provide high load capacity and ventilation, allowing heat dissipation and easy cable routing. Expansion splice plates should be used for thermal expansion and contraction in long outdoor runs.

The mesh design allows easy creation of bends, branches, and exits without damaging cables.

Installation Practices

Assemble the tray system completely before pulling conductors to prevent cable damage. Maintain minimum bend radius for cables exiting the tray. In vertical or angled runs, fasten cables to transverse members; in horizontal runs, cable weight may suffice, but ties can improve spacing and heat dissipation.

Ensure at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance access.

Compliance and Standards

Installation must comply with NEC Article 392, NEMA VE 1/VE 2, and IEC-61537 standards for cable tray systems. These standards cover load/span designations, material selection, grounding, and safe installation practices. Following these guidelines ensures structural integrity, electrical safety, and long-term reliability.
