Distribution Box Main Cable Connection

The main cable from the power supply is connected to the input of the Main MCB in the distribution box, which then distributes power through protective devices to all subcircuits.

Connection Overview

The main cable entering a distribution box carries the phase (live) and neutral wires from the utility supply or energy meter. This cable is the primary feeder and must be rated to handle the total anticipated load of all subcircuits in the distribution board.

Main MC

B (Double Pole): The phase and neutral wires from the main cable are first connected to the input terminals of the Main MCB.

This MC

B acts as the main isolator and provides overcurrent protection for the entire installation.

RCC

B / RCD: The output of the Main MCB is connected to the input of the RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker).

The RCC

B protects against earth leakage and electric shock by disconnecting the circuit if a fault occurs. Distribution to Subcircuits: From the RCCB, the phase wires are routed to the input of single-pole or double-pole MCBs for individual subcircuits, while the neutral wires are connected to the neutral busbar.

The MC

Bs protect each subcircuit from overload or short circuit. Earthing: The earth wire from the main supply is connected to the earth busbar in the distribution box. All metallic parts of the DB and the earth terminals of subcircuits are bonded to this busbar to ensure safety.

Cable Sizing and Safety

The cross-sectional area of the main cable should match the total load; for example, a 60A single-phase DB typically uses 16mm² copper cables for phase and neutral. Ensure all connections are tight and properly insulated to prevent overheating or arcing. Identify clearly the input and output terminals of MCBs and RCCBs to avoid miswiring.

Summary

The main cable serves as the primary power source for the distribution box. Proper connection involves routing the phase and neutral through the Main MCB, then through the RCCB, and finally distributing to individual MCBs for subcircuits, with all earth connections secured to the earth busbar. This setup ensures overcurrent protection, leakage protection, and safe distribution of electricity throughout the building.
