Beam splitter with the lowest attenuation

Plate and pellicle beam splitters with anti-reflection coatings generally offer the lowest attenuation.

Types of Low-

Attenuation Beam Splitters

Plate Beam Splitters: These consist of a flat glass substrate with a partially reflecting coating on one surface. They are designed to split light while minimizing losses, especially when the back surface is treated with an anti-reflection (AR) coating. Plate beam splitters are suitable for high-energy applications because no epoxy or optical contacting is used, allowing high laser damage thresholds and low attenuation of the transmitted beam.

Pellicle Beam Splitters: Pellicles use a very thin membrane stretched over a frame, which reduces reflections from the substrate and minimizes optical losses. They are particularly effective in applications where ghost reflections and beam displacement must be minimized, offering very low attenuation for sensitive optical systems. Cube Beam Splitters: While cube beam splitters avoid beam displacement and are convenient for alignment, they can introduce slightly higher attenuation due to the cemented interface between the prisms.

Optical contacting can improve performance, but standard epoxy-bonded cubes may have higher losses compared to plate or pellicle types.

Coating Considerations

The coating type is critical for low attenuation. Dielectric coatings optimized for specific wavelengths or broadband hybrid coatings can maximize transmission and minimize reflection losses. Anti-reflection coatings on the exit surface further reduce attenuation and ghost reflections.

Non-polarizing coatings are preferred when maintaining the original polarization and minimizing power loss is important.

Summary

For applications requiring minimal optical power loss, plate beam splitters with AR coatings or pellicle beam splitters are generally the best choices. Cube beam splitters are convenient but may introduce slightly higher attenuation depending on the bonding method and coating. Selecting the appropriate coating and substrate type is essential to achieve the lowest possible attenuation in your optical system.

In its most common form, a cube, a beam splitter is made from two triangular glass prisms which are glued together at their base using polyester, epoxy, or urethane-based adhesives. (Before these synthetic resins, natural ones were used, e.g. Canada balsam.) The thickness of the resin layer is adjusted such that (for a certain wavelength) half of the light incident through one "port" (i.e., face of the cube) is reflected and th

Beam Splitters – optical power splitter, beamsplitter, thin-film

Beam splitters are devices for splitting a laser beam into two or more beams. There are different types, including polarizing and non-polarizing versions.

Beam Splitter Selection Guide

Our beam splitters are made from high grade glass material with laser grade surface flatness & surface quality for tighter tolerance on the splitting ratio.

What are Beamsplitters?

Polarizing beamsplitters are designed to split light into reflected S-polarized and transmitted P-polarized beams. They can be used to split unpolarized light at a 50/50 ratio, or for polarization separation

How beam splitters affect signal attenuation and polarization

Beam Splitters

Non-polarizing beam splitters split the incident light with an R/T ratio of 50%. They are designed for exactly one wavelength and do not have any influence on the polarization of the beam to be split.
