Detection Characteristics of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors detect physical changes by measuring shifts in the reflected Bragg wavelength caused by strain, temperature, or other perturbations. Principle of DetectionFBG sensors operate by creating periodic variations in the refractive index along the core of an optical fiber, forming a wavelength-specific reflector known as the Bragg grating. When light travels through the fiber, the FBG reflects a specific wavelength (the Bragg wavelength) while transmitting others.

Any mechanical strain or temperature change alters the grating period or the refractive index, causing a shift in the reflected wavelength. This shift is measured by an optical interrogator, which converts it into quantitative information about the applied strain or temperature.

Detection Techniques

The most common detection method involves spectral peak analysis, where the reflected Bragg wavelength is monitored for shifts corresponding to environmental changes.

Advanced FB

G sensors can also leverage exceptional points (EPs) in non-Hermitian photonics to achieve enhanced sensitivity, allowing detection of minute perturbations in temperature or strain with nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement over conventional FBGs.

Advantages of FBG Detection

High sensitivity: Capable of detecting small changes in strain or temperature. Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Ideal for high-voltage or high-frequency environments. Multiplexing capability: Multiple FBGs can be inscribed along a single fiber for distributed sensing.

Durability: Resistant to harsh environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and corrosive chemicals. ApplicationsFBG sensors are widely used in structural health monitoring of bridges, buildings, and aerospace structures, as well as in environmental monitoring and biochemical sensing. Proper packaging allows embedding in concrete or other materials for long-term monitoring, and custom interrogation systems can be developed for high-precision or specialized applications.

SummaryFBG sensor detection relies on measuring shifts in the Bragg wavelength caused by external perturbations. Their combination of high sensitivity, robustness, and multiplexing capability makes them a versatile tool for multi-parameter sensing across civil, aerospace, and environmental applications.
