Inverter AC DC Bridge

A full-bridge inverter converts DC power into AC by alternately switching four semiconductor devices in an H-bridge configuration, producing a controlled AC output suitable for various applications.

Structure and Components

A full-bridge inverter consists of four controlled switches (such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, BJTs, or thyristors) arranged in an H-bridge configuration, along with four freewheeling diodes that provide a path for load current when the switches are off.

The D

C input is applied across the bridge, and the AC output is taken across the load connected between the bridge's midpoints. Compared to a half-bridge inverter, the full-bridge topology doubles the RMS output voltage for the same DC input.

Working Principle

The inverter operates by alternating the polarity of the DC voltage across the load. During one half-cycle, switches T1 and T2 conduct, applying positive voltage to the load. In the next half-cycle, switches T3 and T4 conduct, reversing the voltage polarity.

This produces a square-wave AC output, which can be filtered or modulated to approximate a sinusoidal waveform. For resistive loads, the operation is straightforward, while RL or RLC loads introduce phase shifts in current and voltage.

Modulation Techniques

To generate a sinusoidal AC output, modern inverters use Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM).

SPW

M compares a sinusoidal reference signal with a high-frequency triangular carrier to produce gating signals for the switches. This allows precise control of output voltage and reduces harmonic distortion, making the inverter suitable for sensitive loads. ApplicationsFull-bridge inverters are widely used in: Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) for providing AC backup from DC batteries.

A

C motor drives and industrial motor control. Renewable energy systems, such as solar PV inverters, where DC from panels is converted to grid-compatible AC. Induction heating and other high-frequency applications using isolated DC-DC stages followed by full-bridge DC-AC conversion.

Advantages

Higher voltage utilization compared to half-bridge inverters. Capability to drive inductive and resistive loads efficiently. Compatibility with SPWM for low-harmonic, high-quality AC output.

Flexibility for single-phase or three-phase configurations.

Summary

The Inverter AC/DC Bridge, or full-bridge inverter, is a fundamental power electronics circuit that converts DC to AC efficiently. By controlling four switches in an H-bridge and using modulation techniques like SPWM, it provides a reliable AC output for a wide range of applications, from UPS systems to renewable energy integration.
