Fiber optic distance sensor cable

Fiber optic distance sensor cables transmit light between a sensor amplifier and sensing heads, enabling precise detection and measurement over long distances, even in harsh or confined environments.

Structure and Components

Fiber optic sensor cables typically consist of three main components: the core, cladding, and coating. The core carries the light signal, while the cladding has a lower refractive index to contain light via total internal reflection, allowing signals to travel long distances with minimal loss. The coating protects the fiber and can vary depending on environmental conditions, with polyacrylate for standard temperatures and polyimide or metal coatings for high-temperature or cryogenic applications.

Some cables also include a sheath for mechanical protection and chemical resistance.

Types of Fiber Optic Sensor Cables

Standard telecom fibers: Suitable for general monitoring and long-distance signal transmission. Specialty sensor cables: Designed for precise measurements in harsh environments, including metal-tubing, metal-free, tube-in-tube, and armored stainless steel configurations. Plastic vs. glass fibers: Glass fibers offer high temperature and chemical resistance, while plastic fibers provide flexibility and ease of installation.

Distributed sensing cables: Enable continuous monitoring along the entire cable length, detecting temperature, strain, vibration, and acoustic signals in real time.

Applications

Fiber optic distance sensor cables are widely used in factory automation, robotics, and industrial monitoring. They are ideal for: Tight or confined spaces where electronic sensors cannot fit. Harsh environments with high temperatures, chemicals, or mechanical stress.

Real-time monitoring of infrastructure, pipelines, or critical equipment using distributed sensing technology. Detection of objects, surfaces, fluid levels, and strip edges in manufacturing processes.

Advantages

High durability: Resistant to bending, torsion, and environmental stress, maintaining signal quality over long periods. Flexibility: Metal-free cables reduce induced voltages, while armored cables provide robust protection. Precision: Capable of detecting small changes in light reflection or transmission, enabling accurate distance and presence measurements.

Integration: Sensor heads can be mounted close to targets while the amplifier remains at a safe distance, allowing flexible system design. Fiber optic distance sensor cables are essential for applications requiring reliable, precise, and long-distance optical sensing, particularly in environments where conventional electronic sensors are impractical. Their versatility in materials, coatings, and configurations ensures suitability for a wide range of industrial and monitoring applications.
