Installation of grounding terminal in outdoor distribution box

Proper grounding of an outdoor distribution box ensures safety, prevents electrical faults, and maintains low-resistance connections.

Grounding Terminal Placement and Connection

Outdoor distribution boxes, especially metal enclosures like IP65 stainless steel boxes, must form a complete conductive circuit. Dedicated grounding terminals are typically pre-fabricated inside the box on the base plate, side walls, or door panels, often marked with grounding symbols for easy identification and connection. For metal doors, a flexible braided copper jumper should connect the door to the enclosure body to maintain continuity.

Wire Sizing and Material

In the US, a 10 AWG (5. 26 mm²) ground wire is standard, while in other markets, a 6 mm² wire is recommended. For connections between mounting plates and components like spindle plates, larger wires (e.g., 16 mm² or 6 AWG) may be required to maintain low resistance, especially for long tool cables.

Use copper or tin-plated terminals and consider applying a small amount of conductive grease to prevent electrochemical corrosion and maintain low contact resistance over time.

Connection Hardware and Techniques

Dedicated bolts welded to the enclosure or door panel should be tightened securely. Serrated or star washers are recommended to pierce oxide layers and ensure good electrical contact. For painted surfaces, scrape the paint to bare metal at the connection point to improve conductivity.

All metallic components inside the enclosure should be bonded to the grounding bar or terminal to ensure a continuous path to earth.

Grounding to Earth

Connect the enclosure's grounding terminal to a central grounding point or earth rod. The ground resistance should be tested and maintained below 0. 1 ohm for system components, with a maximum of 25 ohms for general outdoor installations.

Multiple rods or continuous conductors may be required if resistance exceeds the recommended limit.

Verification

After installation, use a multimeter or ground resistance tester to measure the resistance from any point on the enclosure to the main grounding electrode. High resistance may indicate loose bolts, insufficient cleaning of contact surfaces, or inadequate wire sizing.

Best Practices

Avoid drilling holes in stainless steel enclosures after manufacturing to prevent corrosion and damage. Ensure sufficient space around terminals for bending and connecting large-section wires. Follow manufacturer-provided documentation and UL-listed enclosure guidelines for grounding hardware and placement.

By following these steps, the outdoor distribution box will be safely grounded, minimizing the risk of electrical faults, surges, and equipment damage.
