Splitter with two connectors and one connector

An Ethernet splitter allows a single Ethernet port to connect to two devices by dividing the cable's wire pairs, but it does not increase total bandwidth and has speed limitations.

How It Works

An Ethernet splitter typically has one input connector and two output connectors (or vice versa). It works by using the unused wire pairs in a standard Ethernet cable to carry a second network signal. Standard Cat5e or higher cables have four twisted pairs, but 100 Mbps Ethernet only uses two pairs.

The splitter allocates the remaining pairs to a second connection, effectively allowing two devices to share a single cable.

Limitations

Speed: Traditional splitters are limited to 100 Mbps per connection because each connection only uses two pairs of wires. They cannot support full gigabit speeds (1000 Mbps) unless using specialized powered splitters designed for gigabit Ethernet. Distance: Splitters work over standard Ethernet distances (up to 100 meters), but signal quality may degrade if the cable is long or of poor quality.

Not a switch: Unlike a network switch, a splitter does not actively manage traffic or increase bandwidth. Both devices share the same physical cable, so heavy simultaneous usage can reduce performance.

Setup

A typical splitter kit includes two adapters: Input adapter: Connects to the router or switch and combines two network signals onto one cable. Output adapter: Splits the single cable back into two Ethernet ports for devices. For gigabit-capable splitters, some models require external power to maintain stable high-speed connections.

Practical Use

Ethernet splitters are useful when: You have limited wall ports but need to connect two devices. Running a second cable is impractical. You need a temporary or low-bandwidth solution for home or small office setups.

For higher-speed or more robust networking, a network switch is recommended, as it allows multiple devices to connect at full gigabit speeds without sharing bandwidth. In summary, a splitter with one and two connectors is a simple, cost-effective way to expand Ethernet connectivity, but it is best suited for low to moderate-speed applications and should not be confused with a switch for high-performance networking.
