Installation of Trapezoidal Cable Tray Shaft

Trapezoidal cable trays in shafts should be installed using properly designed supports, aligned vertical and horizontal runs, and adherence to safety and code requirements.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, review the approved shop drawings to determine tray routes, lengths, and locations within the shaft. Ensure all materials, including trays, fittings, and accessories, are inspected for damage and compliance with project specifications. Store trays horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports at intervals of approximately one meter to prevent deformation and protect from moisture and sunlight.

Support and Hanging System

The most common support method is the trapeze or swing support. Install vertical hangers first, threading hex nuts 25–50 mm above the intended tray bottom. Slide on square washers, then attach the cross member, ensuring vertical hangers pass through pre-drilled holes slightly larger than the all-thread diameter for easy adjustment.

The cross member should allow attachment of tray clips and horizontal adjustment. Secure the top set of hex nuts to snugly hold the cross member level.

Tray Installation

Attach the trapezoidal tray to the cross member using tray clips, which can be installed inside or outside the tray depending on space and interference. Ensure the tray is level and properly aligned along the shaft, maintaining sufficient clearance for cable pulling and future maintenance.

Safety and Compliance

All installation work must comply with local electrical codes (e.g., Canadian Electrical Code or NEC), occupational health and safety procedures, and project-specific regulations. Cable trays should not be used as walkways or support for personnel, and proper grounding and bonding must be ensured.

Additional Considerations

Calculate load requirements to ensure supports can handle the weight of cables and future additions. Protect exposed cables from falling debris during installation. Install covers promptly if the tray is to be enclosed.

Inspect the installation periodically as part of routine maintenance. By following these steps, trapezoidal cable trays can be safely and efficiently installed in shafts, ensuring structural integrity, compliance, and ease of future maintenance.
