Small-scale optical cable fusion

Small-scale optical cable fusion involves joining optical fibers using a fusion splicer, creating low-loss, durable connections suitable for FTTH and other localized fiber installations.

Overview of Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the process of welding two optical fibers together by melting their ends with an electric arc, typically at temperatures around 1,800°C. This method provides the lowest optical loss, minimal reflectance, and the strongest joint between fibers, making it ideal for both single-mode and multimode fibers. Single-mode fibers have a very thin core (~9.

2 µm) suitable for long-distance, high-speed transmission, while multimode fibers have thicker cores (50–62 µm) and are generally used for shorter distances or premises networks.

Equipment for Small-

Scale Fusion

For small-scale or field applications, handheld or portable fusion splicers are preferred. These devices are compact, lightweight, and designed for FTTH installations, allowing technicians to splice fibers directly at subscriber locations. Modern splicers often include: Optical core alignment systems (Profile Alignment or LID Core Alignment) to automatically align fiber cores for optimal light transmission.

Precision fiber cleavers to ensure clean, accurate fiber ends, which are critical for low-loss splicing. Heat shrink sleeves to protect the splice from moisture and mechanical stress. Handheld splicers may also feature lifting/lowering modules to handle wing-type sleeve connectors, reducing the risk of fiber breakage during assembly.

Fiber Preparation and Safety

Proper fiber preparation is essential: Stripping: Remove the fiber coating carefully using calibrated strippers to avoid microfractures. Cleaning: Use alcohol wipes to remove debris and dust. Cleaving: Produce a flat, perpendicular fiber end for optimal fusion.

Safety precautions are critical because the fusion arc can exceed 5,000°C, and fiber shards can cause injury. Always wear high-rated safety goggles, cut-resistant gloves, and dispose of fiber waste properly. Anti-static measures are recommended to protect both the fiber and splicer electronics.

Splicing Process

Align fibers using the splicer's optical or LID alignment system. Fuse fibers with an electric arc, forming a continuous glass connection. Inspect splice: Most splicers estimate splice loss automatically.

Protect splice: Apply a heat-shrink sleeve to safeguard the joint. For small-scale operations, splicing is usually done one fiber at a time, though ribbon splicing is possible for multiple fibers simultaneously. ApplicationsSmall-scale fusion splicing is commonly used in: FTTH networks to connect subscriber lines to the optical network terminal.

Laboratory or test setups where precise, low-loss fiber connections are required. Repair or extension of existing fiber runs in localized installations. By following proper preparation, alignment, and safety procedures, small-scale optical cable fusion can achieve high-performance, reliable splices suitable for both professional and field applications.
