Core preparation of 144-core optical cable

Preparing a 144-core optical cable involves careful sheath removal, buffer tube separation, and fiber exposure to ensure safe and efficient access to all fibers.

Tools and Safety

Before starting, gather the following tools: sheath knife, buffer tube removal tool, scissors, nippers, diagonal cutters, paper towels, and soft cloths for cleaning fibers. Always follow local health and safety regulations, wear protective gloves, and ensure the workspace is clean and free of debris to prevent fiber damage or injury.

Sheath Removal

Mark the cable: Determine the length of sheath to remove, typically 2 meters (6 feet) for end access, and mark the cable accordingly. Ring cut: Use a sheath knife to make a circumferential cut at the marked distance, taking care not to damage the ripcord or strength members. Longitudinal cuts: Make two longitudinal cuts opposite each other along the sheath.

Remove the sheath: Flex the cable gently to separate the sheath and discard it. Pull the ripcord to assist in removing the sheath completely.

Core Exposure

Identify the central strength member (CSM): Typically a glass-reinforced plastic rod around which buffer tubes are stranded. Unwind binder yarns: Remove any binder threads securing the buffer tubes. Remove water-swellable elements: Carefully extract any water-blocking yarns or tapes between buffer tube layers.

Buffer Tube Handling

Separate layers: High fiber-count cables may have two layers of buffer tubes. Carefully separate the inner and outer layers from the central strength member. Check tool settings: On a dummy section, adjust the buffer tube removal tool to score the tube without damaging fibers.

Remove buffer tubes: Ring the tube in 1–2 ft sections, flex, and remove until the desired fiber length is exposed. Clean fibers: Gently wipe off thixotropic gel or water-blocking compound using a soft cotton cloth.

Fiber Preparation

Inspect fibers: Ensure no nicks or scratches are present. Prepare for termination or splicing: Fibers are now ready for fusion splicing, connectorization, or patching according to project requirements.

Best Practices

Work slowly and methodically to avoid fiber damage. Always test tool settings on a dummy section before working on the main cable. Maintain proper labeling of buffer tubes and fibers to prevent confusion during splicing or termination.

Follow manufacturer-specific guidelines, as some 144-core cables may have proprietary water-blocking compounds or tube materials. By following these steps, a 144-core optical cable can be safely prepared for installation, splicing, or termination while maintaining fiber integrity and performance.
