Fiber Array Component Manufacturing Process

Fiber arrays are fabricated by precisely aligning optical fibers in V-grooves, bonding them with adhesives, and polishing the ends to achieve high-precision optical coupling.

Overview

A fiber array is a one- or two-dimensional arrangement of optical fibers used to couple light between sources, fibers, and photonic components such as planar waveguides or arrayed waveguide gratings. The production process ensures precise fiber positioning, minimal optical loss, and high mechanical stability.

Step-by-

Step Fabrication

Substrate Preparation The base substrate, often made of high-quality glass such as JGS2, BF33, or BK7, is cleaned and pasted onto the assembly equipment. This substrate will host the V-grooves that align the fibers.

V-

Groove Formation V-shaped grooves are cut into the substrate using precision cutting tools. Tools with 60° or 90° angles are commonly used, and mesh sizes of 600, 800, or 1000 ensure smooth surfaces and minimal edge damage. The grooves define the core pitch, which is the spacing between adjacent fibers.

Fiber Placement and Alignment Stripped optical fibers (coating removed) are carefully placed into the V-grooves. A cover plate may be used to secure the fibers in position. High-precision alignment ensures minimal positional error, which is critical for multi-channel optical modules.

Adhesive Bonding Specialized adhesives are applied to fix the fibers in place and protect them from mechanical stress. Multiple types of glue may be used depending on the fiber type and power handling requirements.

End-

Face Grinding and Polishing The fiber ends are ground and polished to achieve flatness typically below 200 nm and fiber height variation under 200 nm. The polishing angle is controlled within 0. 3°–0.

5° to ensure optimal optical coupling. Quality Control and Testing After assembly, the fiber array undergoes rigorous testing for alignment accuracy, optical loss, and surface quality. This ensures the array meets specifications for high-speed optical modules.

Applications

Fiber arrays are widely used in planar optical waveguides, arrayed waveguide gratings, multi-channel optical modules, and micro-electromechanical systems. They are essential for reducing optical coupling loss and enabling precise light transmission in photonic devices.

Summary

The fiber array production process combines precision mechanical fabrication, careful fiber alignment, adhesive bonding, and meticulous polishing. Each step is critical to achieving high-performance optical arrays suitable for advanced photonic applications.
