Installation of Sudanese Optical Cable Joint Protection Box

Installing a Sudanese optical cable joint protection box involves careful site selection, cable preparation, splicing, and sealing to ensure long-term protection and reliable fiber connectivity.

Site Selection and Mounting

The joint box should be installed in a location that balances protection from environmental exposure and ease of maintenance. Typically, for overhead lines, the box is mounted on a pylon or tower at a height of 8–10 meters above ground, preferably on the inner side of the structure to shield it from direct sunlight, rain, and mechanical damage. Ensure the mounting surface is stable and can support the weight of the box and cables.

Joint Box Preparation

Choose a durable joint box, preferably made of aluminium alloy, which resists heat, corrosion, ozone, and UV radiation. The box should have sufficient capacity for the number of splices required (e.g., 96–336 splices for standard XOK or EWMJ boxes) and include splice trays, anchoring points for strength members, and earthing facilities. Verify that the box meets IP67 or equivalent protection standards to prevent water and dust ingress.

Cable Preparation

Mark the cable at the designated entry point of the joint box. Cut the cable sheath carefully using a handsaw or circular saw, typically leaving 2 meters of exposed cable for preparation. Remove the metallic armor and clean the dielectric support, leaving about 15 cm of aluminum tube visible.

Trim the strengthening members and secure them with screws to maintain stability during installation. Feed the fibers through a transportation tube and remove the loose tube to expose the bare fibers for splicing.

Fiber Splicing and Organization

Place the fibers in splice trays and use heat-shrink splice protectors to secure each splice. Organize spare fibers neatly within the box to prevent bending or stress. Ensure all metallic elements are properly earthed to prevent electrical hazards.

Sealing and Environmental Protection

Close the joint box securely, ensuring waterproof and pressure-tight sealing. Check that all cable entry points are sealed with grommets or compression fittings to maintain IP67 protection. Verify that the box is re-enterable for future maintenance without compromising the seal.

Final Checks

Inspect the installation for mechanical stability and proper alignment. Confirm that all fibers are intact and splices are correctly protected. Ensure compliance with local standards and environmental conditions, including temperature ranges and UV exposure.

By following these steps, the Sudanese optical cable joint protection box will provide long-term protection, reliable fiber connectivity, and ease of maintenance for the optical network.
