Grounding of the main electrical distribution box in the building

Electrical distribution boxes on construction sites must have a permanent, continuous, and effective grounding path to protect workers and equipment, in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart K and NEC Article 250. Key Grounding Requirements1. Equipment Grounding: All metal enclosures, including electrical distribution boxes, must be grounded using an equipment grounding conductor that runs with or encloses the circuit conductors.

This ensures that if a fault energizes the metal enclosure, the current has a safe path to ground, preventing electrocution or fire hazards (OSHA eTool). 2. System or Service Ground: The electrical system itself must be grounded at the transformer and at the service entrance to the building.

This protects the electrical system and connected equipment from damage due to overvoltage or lightning strikes. 3.

Ground-

Fault Protection: All 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles on construction sites that are not part of permanent wiring must be protected by ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to safeguard personnel from electric shock. 4. Continuous and Permanent Path: The grounding path must be continuous and permanent, meaning there should be no breaks or interruptions in the grounding conductor.

Conductors must be capable of safely carrying any fault current that may occur. 5. Bonding of Conductive Materials: All electrically conductive materials in contact with the distribution box, such as metal partitions, frames, or tracks, must be bonded to the grounding system to ensure a low-resistance path for fault currents (NEC Article 250).

6. Grounding Electrodes: Electrodes used for grounding must be free of nonconductive coatings and, if possible, embedded below the permanent moisture level. If a single electrode has a resistance to ground greater than 25 ohms, an additional electrode must be installed at least 6 feet away.

7. Inspection and Maintenance: Employers must implement an assured equipment grounding conductor program, which includes daily visual inspections of cord sets, plugs, and receptacles for damage. Damaged equipment must not be used until repaired.

Practical Considerations

Ensure that all temporary distribution boxes are properly bonded and grounded before energizing circuits.

Use GFC

Is for all portable or temporary receptacles to enhance worker safety. Verify that grounding conductors are sized according to NEC tables (e.g., 250. 66, 250.

102(C)(1), 250. 122) to handle potential fault currents. Maintain documentation of grounding procedures and inspections on-site for OSHA compliance.

By following these requirements, construction site electrical distribution boxes will provide a safe and compliant grounding system, minimizing the risk of electrical shock, equipment damage, and regulatory violations.
