Pulse Fiber Coupler

A pulse fiber coupler operates on the principle of evanescent wave coupling, where light transfers between closely spaced fiber cores through overlapping electromagnetic fields.

Operating Principle

A pulse fiber coupler is a passive optical device that splits or combines light signals between two or more optical fibers. The core mechanism relies on evanescent wave coupling, where a small portion of the light's electromagnetic field extends beyond the fiber core into the cladding. When two fiber cores are brought very close together, typically within a few micrometers, the evanescent field of one fiber overlaps with the adjacent fiber, allowing coherent transfer of light energy from one core to another (engineered to achieve a desired splitting ratio).

Fabrication and Structure

Commonly, fused biconical taper (FBT) couplers are used. In this method, two fibers are heated and stretched, causing their cores to fuse over a short interaction length. The coupling efficiency depends on the length of the fused region, the distance between cores, and the refractive index profile of the fibers.

The interaction region is typically only a few millimeters long, and outside this region, coupling is negligible.

Pulse Signal Considerations

For pulsed signals, the coupler must maintain temporal integrity and minimize dispersion. The coupling strength is wavelength-dependent, so the device is designed to ensure that the pulse shape and energy distribution remain consistent across the operating wavelength range. Directional couplers can be used to split a pulse into two outputs or combine pulses from two inputs while preserving the pulse characteristics.

Key Parameters

Splitting ratio: Defines the fraction of light directed to each output (e.g., 50/50 or 90/10). Insertion loss: The fraction of power lost during coupling. Minimizing this is critical for high-power or sensitive applications.

Wavelength sensitivity: Coupling efficiency varies with wavelength, which must be considered for broadband or pulsed sources.

Applications

Pulse fiber couplers are widely used in fiber lasers, optical interferometers, telecommunication networks, and sensor systems. They allow precise control of light distribution, enabling splitting, combining, or routing of pulsed optical signals without active electronics. In summary, the principle of a pulse fiber coupler is based on evanescent wave interaction between closely spaced fiber cores, with careful design of the fused region and refractive index profile to achieve the desired power distribution and maintain pulse integrity.
