Hangers for horizontal cable tray installation

Horizontal cable trays should be supported with hangers or brackets spaced 1. 5–2 meters apart, using materials and finishes suitable for the environment to ensure safety and durability.

Types of Hangers and Supports

Cable tray systems can be supported using a variety of hangers and brackets: Single Hanger Brackets: Used for overhead or beam mounting, often adjustable to fit 4” or 6” trays, and include threaded rods and nuts for secure attachment (load capacity ~50 lbs per hanger). Channel Hangers: Provide additional stability for longer spans or heavier loads, often used in combination with beam clamps.

Center-

Hung Supports: Allow cables to be deposited from both sides, suitable for ladder tray systems, with maximum load capacities ranging from 318 kg (700 lbs) to 340 kg (750 lbs) and support spacing up to 3. 6 m. Custom or Standard Brackets: Available in aluminum, steel, or galvanized finishes, designed to meet specific project requirements.

Spacing and Load Considerations

Support Spacing: For horizontal runs, hangers should generally be spaced 1. 5–2 meters apart for standard cable loads. Lighter cables, such as data or telecom wiring, may allow spacing up to 3 meters.

Fittings and Radii: SnapTrack fittings with radii less than 12” should be supported within 2 feet of each extremity; larger radius fittings in horizontal planes require an additional center support. Load Capacity: Always verify the maximum load per hanger and ensure the total cable weight does not exceed the rated capacity. Overloading can cause bending or failure of the tray.

Material and Corrosion Protection

Indoor Dry Areas: Electro-galvanized or mild steel hangers are typically sufficient. Outdoor or Moist Environments: Hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel hangers are recommended to prevent rust and galvanic corrosion, especially near coastal or industrial areas. Compatibility: Ensure that the tray and hanger materials are compatible to avoid accelerated corrosion.

Installation Best Practices

Alignment: Supports should be installed so that splice joints fall between the support point and the quarter point of the span. Threaded Rod Installation: Thread the top nut onto the rod, assemble the hanger, and secure with the bottom nut for proper tension and stability. Planning: A qualified designer or engineer should determine the layout, taking into account building codes, clearances, and future cable additions.

Safety: Properly installed hangers prevent sagging, swinging, or collapse, reducing hazards to personnel and equipment. By following these guidelines, horizontal cable tray systems can be installed safely, efficiently, and with long-term durability, accommodating both current and future cabling needs.
