Cable trays and fire pipe supports

Cable trays can coexist with fire pipes if proper spacing, obstruction rules, and firestopping measures are followed.

Physical Clearance and Obstruction Rules

When installing cable trays near fire protection piping, NFPA 13 (2016 Edition) obstruction rules apply. Cable trays should not interfere with sprinkler coverage. For standard upright sprinklers, trays must maintain adequate vertical clearance—typically less than 18 inches below sprinklers is acceptable, but trays should avoid being directly under sprinkler spray patterns unless allowed by the Three Times Rule, which considers vertical, horizontal, and diagonal measurements for obstruction evaluation.

Proper layout ensures both electrical and fire protection systems function effectively.

Firestopping and Penetration Requirements

If cable trays pass through walls or floors alongside fire pipes, fire-rated penetrations must be sealed to maintain compartmentation. This involves using firestop packs, firestop mastic, mineral wool, or fire-rated boards to fill gaps around trays and pipes. The sealing must be tight, without cracks or voids, and may require fire-support plates for slab penetrations.

For larger openings, a fire-resistant backing plate is recommended before sealing. UL-listed firestop systems, such as 3M pillows or intumescent caulks, can be used to ensure compliance with fire ratings for walls and floors.

Tray Selection and Fire Isolation

Cable trays should be fireproof or fire-rated if they pass through areas where fire containment is critical. Fire barriers can be installed within trays to isolate different fire zones, and perforated or wire mesh trays help with heat dissipation. Only trays designed for fire containment should be used for this purpose, and any modifications to the tray structure should be avoided to maintain fire integrity.

Summary

Maintain adequate clearance between cable trays and fire pipes to comply with NFPA 13 obstruction rules. Use firestopping materials for any wall or floor penetrations to preserve fire compartmentation. Select fire-rated trays and install fire barriers where necessary to isolate zones and prevent fire spread.

Ensure routine inspection and maintenance of both cable trays and firestopping systems to maintain long-term safety. By following these guidelines, cable trays can safely coexist with fire pipes while maintaining compliance with fire safety regulations and ensuring effective operation of both systems.
