Long-distance optical cable reel configuration

Proper configuration of long-distance optical cable reels involves careful handling, figure-8 looping, tension control, and use of launch/receive cables for testing to ensure safe deployment and signal integrity.

Reel Handling and Storage

When handling fiber optic cable reels, it is critical to maintain the structural integrity of the reel and the cable wraps. Reels should be transported upright with wheel chocks or secured with chains/belts to prevent shifting during transit. Wood slats or protective materials on the reel protect the cable from mechanical damage, and the tight symmetrical wraps from the factory should be preserved during storage and installation.

Avoid rolling reels over long distances or against the roll direction, as this can loosen the cable and cause payout issues.

Deployment Techniques

During installation, smooth curvatures and minimal bending are essential to prevent fiber damage. Sharp turns, turn-backs, and pulling over edges should be avoided. For long-distance deployment, figure-8 looping is recommended to prevent twisting: loops of 2–4 meters are typical, slightly offset from each other, and the cable should be laid slowly and carefully.

Mechanical pressure should be minimized, especially at crossing points, and LSZH sheathed cables require extra care in high temperatures. Cable reels may include adjustable tension drum brakes, spring rewind, and passive cable guides to control payout speed and tension, ensuring smooth deployment without kinking or squirming. The drum and side plate dimensions should be selected based on cable length and stiffness, and reels should be securely mounted during use.

OTDR Launch and Receive Cable Configuration

For long-distance testing and certification, OTDR launch and receive cables are used to measure the entire fiber link, including the first and last connectors. The launch cable is connected between the OTDR and the fiber under test, while the receive cable is placed at the far end. The fiber type, core size, and modal field diameter should match the main fiber.

For extended distances, launch cables can be up to 50 km, allowing accurate measurement of long links and overcoming OTDR blind zones. Proper connector types (FC, SC, ST, LC) and polish grades (PC, UPC, APC) should be standardized across the project to maintain measurement consistency.

Best Practices Summary

Maintain factory wrap symmetry and minimum bending radius during storage and deployment. Use figure-8 loops to prevent twisting and kinking. Control tension with drum brakes or guides to avoid cable squirting.

Protect cables from mechanical damage, sharp objects, and extreme temperatures. For testing, use appropriately matched OTDR launch and receive cables to measure connector losses and link performance. Secure reels during transport and installation to prevent shifting or damage.

Following these practices ensures safe, efficient deployment of long-distance optical cables while preserving fiber integrity and enabling accurate testing and certification.
