Optical Module Power Tolerance

The optical power threshold of an optical module defines the upper and lower limits of transmit and receive power, beyond which an alarm is triggered to indicate potential module or fiber issues.

Overview

Optical modules have default transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) power thresholds that are verified during testing and are generally fixed to ensure reliable operation. When the optical power exceeds the maximum or falls below the minimum threshold, the system generates an alarm, signaling that the module or connected fiber may be faulty. These thresholds are critical for maintaining signal integrity and preventing communication errors.

Typical Threshold Ranges

Receive Power (Rx): For example, some modules have thresholds ranging from -23 dBm to -3 dBm, with alarms triggered if the received power falls outside this range. Transmit Power (Tx): Alarms are generated if the transmitted power is too high or too low, depending on the module specifications. The exact values vary by module type, manufacturer, and application (e.g., GPON, SFP, or enhanced optical modules).

Configuration and Monitoring

Many optical modules allow upper and lower alarm thresholds to be configured within the default range. Commands such as transceiver diagnosis threshold rx-power or tx-power can adjust thresholds for monitoring purposes. Enhanced modules support real-time querying of optical power, while conventional modules may not provide detailed diagnostics.

Alarm Handling

When an optical power alarm occurs: Check the optical module and fiber link for faults or degradation. Verify interface status to ensure it is not in shutdown, error-down, or loopback state, which may suppress certain alarms. Adjust thresholds if necessary, but only within the recommended default range to avoid false alarms.

Replace the module if the power readings remain abnormal despite troubleshooting.

Importance

Maintaining proper optical power thresholds ensures: Reliable data transmissionPrevention of packet loss or ONU registration issues in GPON systemsEarly detection of fiber degradation or module failure By monitoring and configuring optical power thresholds correctly, network operators can maintain high-quality optical communication and reduce downtime.
