Cable tray as a fixed support

Cable tray supports are fixed using wall brackets, suspended supports, or center suspensions, securely attached to structural elements with appropriate mounting hardware.

Types of Support Elements

Cable tray supports are designed to mechanically hold cable trays and fittings and connect them to structural surfaces such as ceilings, walls, floors, or steel beams. Common support elements include: Wall brackets: Fixed directly to walls to support horizontal cable runs. Suspended supports: Hangers or rods attached to ceilings to suspend trays at the required height.

Center suspensions: Used for long spans to prevent sagging and provide mid-span support. These supports are typically made of steel or stainless steel, often with galvanization or other corrosion protection for durability in industrial environments.

Mounting Methods

Direct Fixing to Structural Surfaces: Wall brackets are anchored using bolts, screws, or expansion anchors suitable for the wall material. Ceiling-mounted supports use threaded rods, clamps, or hangers attached to beams or concrete slabs. Suspended Systems: Cable trays can be suspended from ceilings using rods, chains, or straps.

Rods are fixed to the ceiling with anchors or beam clamps, and trays are attached to the rods with brackets or clamps. Intermediate Supports: For long cable runs, center supports or intermediate hangers are installed to maintain tray alignment and prevent sagging. Spacing between supports depends on tray type (ladder, ventilated trough, or solid bottom) and load, typically following manufacturer guidelines or standards like BS 6946.

Additional Considerations

Load Capacity: Supports must withstand the weight of cables, trays, and any environmental loads such as wind or snow. Alignment and Leveling: Proper leveling ensures smooth cable routing and prevents stress on cables. Mounting Accessories: Plates, clamps, and fasteners are used to secure junction boxes or devices to the tray system.

Compliance: Installations should follow standards such as DIN EN 61537 or BS EN 61537 to ensure safety and reliability. By selecting the appropriate support type, spacing, and mounting hardware, cable trays can be securely fixed to provide a safe, organized, and durable pathway for electrical and communication cables.
