The foundation of a finished distribution box must be stable, level, and properly grounded, typically involving compacted soil, masonry or steel base, and secure connections to the box.

Foundation Preparation

For both electrical and hydraulic distribution boxes, the foundation begins with excavation and soil compaction. The ground should be leveled and compacted to prevent settlement and ensure stability. For raised hydraulic distribution boxes, a minimum excavation depth of 60 cm is recommended to protect inlet and outlet pipes, with proper compaction to support the masonry or concrete base.

Masonry or Concrete Base

A masonry foundation is often constructed in the center of the foundation using random rubble and a 1: 4 mortar mix. The dimensions of the masonry base should match the calculated requirements for the specific distribution box. Pipes for inlets, outlets, and overflow are embedded within the masonry, with PVC pipes typically positioned 40 cm above the top of the masonry to allow for casting the bottom slab.

For electrical distribution boxes, a steel foundation frame or embedded foundation steel is commonly used. The distribution cabinet is placed on the foundation steel, and verticality and levelness are adjusted using pad irons, ensuring the cabinet is firmly bolted to the foundation.

Grounding and Safety

The foundation must also accommodate reliable grounding. Each cabinet panel should be connected to the foundation steel using copper wires, with spring washers to prevent loosening. Doors and panels are connected to the protective conductor to ensure safety against electric shock.

Installation Considerations

Ensure the foundation and embedded conduits are inspected and qualified before installation. Maintain proper spacing and alignment for busbars, inlets, outlets, and surge protective devices. For wall-mounted boxes, expansion bolts or pull bolts are used to secure the box to the wall, ensuring flush alignment.

The foundation should support the weight of the box and allow for maintenance access, including cleaning and inspection of pipes or electrical components.
