Cable Tray Installation Requirements in Aluminum Plants

Cable trays in aluminum plants must be designed and installed with corrosion-resistant materials, proper load support, separation of power and control cables, and compliance with NEC and industrial standards.

Material Selection

Aluminum plants require corrosion-resistant cable trays, typically made of aluminum alloys due to their natural oxide layer that protects against atmospheric and chemical corrosion. The choice of material should consider mechanical strength, hardness, and resistance to high temperatures commonly found in smelting and processing areas. Aluminum trays are preferred for their lightweight, formability, and excellent corrosion resistance.

Tray Design and Types

Cable trays can be ladder, ventilated, solid-bottom, or wire-mesh types depending on the application. Ladder trays are commonly used for power cables, while solid or ventilated trays are suitable for control and instrumentation cables to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and mechanical damage. Rung spacing of 150–230 mm (6–9 inches) is recommended for proper cable support.

Installation Standards

Support Spacing: Follow NEMA VE-1 and VE-2 standards, with recommended support at 1/4 span to minimize deflection and stress at splice points. Clearances: Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance access. Fill Limits: Power cables should not exceed 40% of tray cross-section, and control cables 50%.

Separation: High-power and low-power cables must be separated to prevent EMI. Grounding: Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors if compliant with NEC requirements.

Environmental and Safety Considerations

Aluminum plants often have high temperatures, dust, and chemical exposure, so trays must withstand thermal expansion, corrosion, and mechanical stress. Proper installation prevents overheating, fire hazards, and mechanical failure. Closed or solid trays may be used where heat buildup is minimal, while ventilated trays allow air circulation to dissipate heat.

Compliance and Best Practices

Adhere to NEC Article 392 and, where applicable, IEC standards for industrial cable tray systems. Use tray-rated conductors (Type TC or MC) suitable for open-air environments. Ensure trays remain accessible and are not installed in prohibited areas like hoistways.

Consider thermal contraction and expansion in long runs to prevent stress on cables and trays. By following these guidelines, aluminum plants can achieve safe, reliable, and code-compliant cable tray installations that protect both personnel and equipment while ensuring long-term operational efficiency.
