Fiber optic cable for communication segments in Libya

Libya is now connected to the Medusa subsea cable and has an extensive domestic fiber optic network, significantly enhancing its telecommunications and internet capabilities. International Connectivity: Medusa Subsea CableLibya has formally integrated into the Medusa subsea cable system, an 8,700-kilometre fiber-optic network with 24 fiber pairs and a capacity of 20 terabits per second per pair. This cable connects 11 Mediterranean countries, including Morocco, Portugal, Spain, France, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, and Libya, and is expected to be operational by early 2026.

The cable lands in Tripoli and Benghazi, providing Libya with geographic diversity and reducing congestion on existing networks. The Medusa system is designed for future upgrades and energy efficiency, ensuring long-term scalability. Domestic Network: LFON and NGBNDomestically, Libya operates the Libyan Fiber Optic Network (LFON), a 1,639 km submarine and terrestrial network connecting 13 coastal locations.

Additionally, the Next Generation Broadband Network (NGBN) project aims to link all cities and villages, providing high-reliability fiber optic connections to public and private institutions, supporting e-government, e-health, e-education, and other digital services. The total domestic fiber optic network spans over 12,124 km, forming the backbone for Libya's digital transformation.

Benefits and Strategic Impact

Enhanced Internet Services: Faster speeds, lower latency, and reduced costs for consumers and businesses. Economic Growth: Enables Libya to export telecommunications services to neighboring countries and create employment in the telecom sector. Digital Transformation: Supports e-government, e-health, e-education, and other digital initiatives.

Network Resilience: Multiple landing points and domestic fiber routes improve stability and redundancy.

Technical Considerations

The Medusa cable uses single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2) for long-distance transmission, while domestic networks may include multimode fibers (OM1–OM5) for shorter distances and enterprise connectivity. The system is designed to handle high-capacity data traffic, supporting modern applications such as 5G networks, cloud services, and international data exchange. Libya's integration into both international and domestic fiber optic networks positions the country for significant improvements in digital connectivity, economic development, and regional telecommunications leadership.
