How to connect optical cables in optical repeater sections

Connecting repeater optical cables requires proper grounding, using compatible fiber connectors, careful termination, and testing for signal integrity before powering the repeater.

Preparation and Safety

Before connecting any optical cables, ground the repeater device using the designated ground screw to prevent electrical hazards and signal interference. Only disconnect the grounding after all other cables are removed. Ensure that the power supply voltage matches the repeater specifications and that the electrical wires are voltage-free and suitable for the ambient temperature of the installation site.

Fiber Optic Cable Connection

Install the fiber optic cable according to the manufacturer's routing and handling guidelines to avoid bends or stress that could increase signal loss. Terminate the fiber ends with low-loss industrial connectors, typically ST-type or BFOC/2. 5 sockets, depending on the repeater model.

Insert the fiber connectors into the repeater's optical ports carefully, ensuring a secure fit without forcing the connector, which could damage the fiber or the port. Test the fiber cable for proper attenuation and signal quality before connecting the repeater to ensure minimal optical loss.

Electrical and Power Connections

Connect the repeater's electrical interface to the network using the appropriate connector (e.g., 9-pin D for Modbus Plus or 4-pin for other devices) and verify compliance with safety standards. For repeaters with redundant power supplies, connect each supply to separate terminals to improve operational safety.

Configuration and Testing

After connecting the fiber and electrical cables, power on the repeater and observe the status LEDs. A steady or correctly flashing LED indicates proper operation.

For FTT

H or home network repeaters, ensure the repeater is connected to the fiber optic modem (ONT) and, if necessary, configure it via the manufacturer's app or manual settings. Verify network connectivity and signal strength using appropriate testing tools to confirm that the repeater is amplifying or passing the optical signal correctly.

Maintenance Tips

Avoid bending the fiber cables sharply and protect them from physical damage. Periodically check the connectors for dust or contamination and clean them with approved fiber cleaning tools. Ensure grounding and power connections remain secure to prevent signal degradation or electrical hazards.

By following these steps—grounding, proper termination, careful connection, and testing—you can ensure reliable operation of fiber optic repeaters in both industrial and home network environments.
