Basic Wiring of Household Circuit Distribution Box

A household distribution box safely distributes electricity from the main supply to sub-circuits using MCBs, RCCBs, and proper phase, neutral, and earth connections. Overview of a Distribution BoxA distribution box (DB), also called a consumer unit or panel board, is the central point where the main electrical supply is divided into multiple sub-circuits for lighting, sockets, and appliances. It contains: Main MCB or isolator: Controls the overall power supply to the house.

RCC

B (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Protects against leakage currents and electric shocks.

MC

Bs (Miniature Circuit Breakers): Protect individual sub-circuits from overloads and short circuits. Neutral and earth bus bars: Provide common connection points for neutral and earth wires.

Step-by-

Step Wiring Procedure

Incoming Supply ConnectionConnect the phase (live) and neutral wires from the energy meter to the main isolator or main MCB. The isolator allows manual disconnection of the entire house supply for safety.

RCCB Installation

Connect the output of the main isolator to the RCCB. The RCCB's phase input receives the live wire, and its neutral input receives the neutral wire.

The RCC

B protects against leakage currents and ensures safety from electric shocks.

Neutral and Earth Bus Bars

Connect the neutral output from the RCCB to the neutral bus bar. Connect all earth wires from sub-circuits to the earth bus bar. Ensure proper earthing to prevent electrical hazards.

MC

B Connections for Sub-CircuitsConnect the phase output from the RCCB to the input terminals of individual MCBs.

Each MC

B protects a specific sub-circuit, such as lighting, socket outlets, or heavy appliances. Connect the neutral of each sub-circuit to the neutral bus bar.

Sub-

Circuit WiringPre-wire all sub-circuits (lighting, sockets, AC units) before connecting to the DB. Ensure the cable size matches the load; for example, a 60A main supply may require 16mm² phase and neutral cables. Connect each sub-circuit to its respective MCB, ensuring correct labeling for easy identification.

Safety and Best Practices

Always turn off the main supply before working on the DB. Use insulated tools and wear protective gear. Ensure proper segregation of phase, neutral, and earth wires.

Label all MCBs clearly to indicate the connected sub-circuits. Follow local electrical codes and standards for wire sizing, breaker ratings, and installation practices.

Typical Single-

Phase Wiring Diagram

Main Supply → Main MCB → RCCB → MCBs → Sub-CircuitsNeutral lines from RCCB connect to neutral bus bar, and earth lines connect to earth bus bar. Lighting circuits typically use 10–16A MCBs, socket outlets 16–20A, and heavy appliances may use dedicated double-pole MCBs. By following this sequence, a household distribution box can be wired safely, ensuring protection against overloads, short circuits, and leakage currents while providing reliable power distribution throughout the home.
