Routers that can directly use fiber optic cables

Fiber and communications infrastructure knowledge brief Published 22 Jun 2024

Prepared for preliminary research by the ROGER FIBRE knowledge desk. Confirm optical interfaces, port or core capacity, electrical input and output, enclosure protection, thermal design and installation limits against current standards and product documentation.

Routers compatible with fiber optic internet typically feature multi-gigabit WAN ports or integrated ONT support, with top options including the Netgear Nighthawk RS700S, ASUS RT-BE96U, and TP-Link Archer AX series.

Key Considerations for Fiber-

Compatible RoutersWAN Port Type: Most fiber connections terminate at an ONT, which converts optical signals to Ethernet. Routers with 1 Gbps or multi-gigabit WAN ports can connect directly to the ONT for full fiber speeds. Some advanced routers, like the ASUS RT-BE96U, include dual 10 Gbps WAN/LAN ports for high-speed fiber plans.

Wi-

Fi Standards: To maximize fiber speeds, routers supporting Wi-Fi 6 (AX) or Wi-Fi 7 are recommended.

Wi-

Fi 7 routers, such as the Netgear Nighthawk RS700S, deliver faster speeds and better performance for multiple devices, gaming, and UHD streaming. Coverage and Device Support: Consider the size of your home or office and the number of devices. High-end routers like the RS700S can cover up to 3,500 square feet and support 200 devices simultaneously.

Mesh systems, such as the Linksys Velop AX4200, are ideal for eliminating dead zones in larger spaces.

LA

N Ports: For wired connections, ensure the router has sufficient Ethernet ports. Many fiber routers offer 4 or more LAN ports, with some models providing 2. 5G or 10G ports for NAS setups or high-speed workstations.

Recommended Fiber-

Ready Routers

Netgear Nighthawk Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 (RS700S): Multi-gig speeds, Wi-Fi 7, excellent range, supports gaming, streaming, and business use.

ASU

S RT-BE96U: Tri-band Wi-Fi 7, dual 10 Gbps WAN/LAN ports, four 2. 5G LAN ports, ideal for multi-gig fiber plans. TP-Link Archer AX55/AX90/AX1800: Wi-Fi 6 routers offering reliable speeds, good coverage, and budget-friendly options for smaller homes.

Linksys Velop AX4200: Mesh system for whole-home coverage, suitable for large homes with multiple devices.

Google Nest Wi-

Fi: Best for ease of use and smart home integration, though limited in multi-gigabit wired speeds.

Summary

To connect directly to fiber optic internet, choose a router with multi-gigabit WAN ports, support for Wi-Fi 6 or 7, and sufficient LAN ports for wired devices. High-performance models like the Netgear RS700S or ASUS RT-BE96U are ideal for maximizing fiber speeds, while mesh systems or budget-friendly Wi-Fi 6 routers can suit smaller homes or simpler setups.
