Optical port splitter on switch

Optical port splitters allow a single switch port or fiber signal to serve multiple endpoints, either via switch-level port splitting or passive optical splitters in PON networks.

Switch-

Level Optical Port Splitting

Certain high-speed switch ports, such as QSFP+ and QSFP28, can be split into multiple lower-speed channels. For example, a 40G or 100G QSFP28 port can be divided into four 10G or 25G interfaces, depending on the switch's MAC and PHY capabilities. Configuration typically involves a CLI command like split on the interface, which disables the original port and creates multiple logical interfaces.

Some switches require a reboot for the split to take effect, though newer firmware versions may remove this requirement. Limitations include: Only specific ports may support splitting due to ASIC or PHY constraints. Not all QSFP28 ports can split into 25G channels; some only support 10G splits.

Each split interface behaves as an independent port for VLANs, routing, and monitoring. This type of splitting is logical, meaning the physical fiber remains the same, but the switch treats it as multiple interfaces.

Passive Optical Splitters in PON Networks

In fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or office (FTTO) networks, optical splitters are passive devices that divide a single optical signal from an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) into multiple outputs for Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). Key points include: Split Ratios: Common ratios are 1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 8, 1: 16, 1: 32, or 1: 64. Higher split ratios reduce optical power per output, which must be considered for ONT sensitivity.

Architectures: Centralized splitting places splitters at a central location, allowing flexible reassignment of outputs. Cascaded/distributed splitting uses multiple stages of splitters closer to end users, optimizing fiber usage and deployment cost. Passive Operation: No power is required, reducing operational costs and maintenance.

Scalability: One OLT port can serve multiple endpoints, reducing the need for additional fibers or OLT ports.

Practical Considerations

Bandwidth Sharing: In both switch-level and PON splitters, the total bandwidth is shared among the split interfaces or outputs. Ensure the split does not exceed the capacity of the original port or fiber. Distance and Loss: Optical splitters introduce insertion loss; higher split ratios or longer fiber runs may require optical amplifiers or higher-power transceivers.

Deployment Choice: Switch-level splitting is ideal for data center or enterprise networks where multiple logical interfaces are needed from a single high-speed port. Passive optical splitters are suited for service provider networks delivering fiber to multiple subscribers. By understanding the differences between logical port splitting on switches and physical optical splitters in PON networks, network designers can optimize both capacity and cost while maintaining reliable connectivity.

Splitting of QSFP+ and QSFP28 ports

Most QSFP28 ports can be used with either 40G or 100G optics, DAC or AOC cables. Not all QSFP28 port can be split into channels of 10G or 25G: what''s required are MACs and PHYs that can support
