How to use Huawei passive beam splitter

A Huawei passive beam splitter (passive aggregation module) splits and multiplexes optical signals without power, enabling point-to-multipoint connectivity in a PEN network.

Overview

Huawei passive beam splitters, also called passive aggregation modules, are used in the Xingmai Passive Ethernet Network (PEN) to distribute optical signals from a central switch to multiple remote devices and to combine signals from remote modules back to the uplink. They operate passively, meaning they do not require power, and handle optical energy splitting and multiplexing without altering wavelengths.

Installation

Mounting: Passive aggregation modules can be installed in a subrack with three slots. Each slot can hold one module (e.g., HW-PEN-16LC-2KM or HW-PEN-16LC-10KM). Fiber Connections: Uplink Port: Connects to the PEN central optical module.

T

X Ports (Downlink): Connect to remote optical modules or access devices.

R

X Ports (Uplink from Remote): Receive signals from remote modules to be multiplexed back to the uplink. Distance Support: Modules support up to 2 km for standard models and up to 10 km for long-distance models.

Operation

Downlink (Transmit): The splitter divides the light from the uplink port into multiple outputs.

Each T

X port carries all channels from the central optical module, allowing multiple remote devices to receive the same optical signals. Uplink (Receive): The splitter combines signals from multiple remote modules into a single uplink channel. For WDM-enabled modules, it can multiplex different wavelengths into one fiber or demultiplex them into separate channels.

Channel Support: Typically supports 2: 8 splitting and can handle eight channels per group, with each channel using a specific wavelength pair for bidirectional communication.

Practical Tips

No Power Required: Since the module is passive, it reduces fire risk and eliminates the need for ELV rooms. Mixed Module Use: You can mix different optical modules in a group for flexible deployment. Integration: Ensure the wavelengths of remote optical modules match the central optical module to maintain proper bidirectional communication.

O&

M: Use the PEN network's digital map and O&M platform to monitor network health and optimize performance. By following these steps, the Huawei passive beam splitter can be effectively deployed to extend high-speed optical connectivity across multiple endpoints in a campus or dense-room environment.
