Feeder and Pigtail

A feeder is a main power or signal cable supplying energy or data, while a pigtail is a short cable or wire used to connect the feeder to devices or other cables.

Feeder Cables

A feeder cable is a primary conductor that carries electrical power or signals from a source to distribution points or devices. In industrial and commercial electrical systems, feeder cables are typically larger in size to handle higher current loads. For example, 3M motor lead pigtail splice kits accommodate feeder cables ranging from 1/0 AWG to 250 kcmil, capable of handling voltages up to 5–8.

7 kV depending on the kit. Feeder cables are often terminated with lugs or connectors to facilitate secure splicing or device connections.

Pigtail Connectors

A pigtail is a short length of wire or fiber with a connector on one end and a bare or stripped end on the other. In electrical systems, pigtails are used to connect multiple wires to a single device terminal, such as outlets, switches, or motors. This allows for a clean, reliable connection without overcrowding the terminal.

Grounding pigtails, device pigtails, and automotive pigtails are common types, each designed for specific applications. In fiber optics, pigtails are fusion-spliced to field fibers to provide a pre-terminated connector for easier installation.

Feeder and Pigtail Splicing

In motor lead applications, pigtail splices connect feeder cables to motor leads. Kits like the 3M 5300 and 5380 series include EPDM rubber lug covers, mastic sealing strips, and other materials to insulate and protect the splice. The process involves crimping copper lugs onto the feeder and motor lead cables, bolting them together in a pigtail configuration, and sealing the connection.

Each kit typically allows for three splices and accommodates a range of cable sizes.

Applications

Electrical wiring: Connecting multiple branch circuits to a single device or motor. Industrial motors: Splicing motor leads to incoming feeder cables for high-voltage applications. Fiber optics: Terminating field fibers with pre-connectorized pigtails for telecom or data center networks.

Automotive: Extending or repairing wiring harnesses with pre-wired pigtail assemblies. Feeder and pigtail combinations simplify installation, improve reliability, and ensure proper insulation and stress control in both electrical and fiber optic systems.

3M™ Motor Lead Pigtail Splice 5324, 5-8 kV, 250-500 kcmil (feeder),

This shielded and non shielded splice kit features a slip on splice cover that is made of a durable EPDM rubber while mastic strips are used for moisture seal applications. It includes high dielectric constant

Motor Lead Connections

Motor lead pigtail connections (5316 through 5319) are designed to splice up to 5 to 8 kV non-shielded feeder and motor lead cables. The splices are made with a slip-on lug cover made of EPDM rubber.

How to Make Pigtail Electrical Wire Connections

Pigtail connections are an effective method for safely linking multiple circuit wires to a single electrical device, such as an outlet receptacle or a light fixture.
