What is a single-reel optical cable

A single reel optical cable is a pre-packaged, single-fiber or simplex fiber optic cable designed for efficient deployment in indoor or ducted installations.

Overview

Single reel optical cables, also known as simplex or single-fiber cables on reels, are designed for interconnect and network applications where a single optical fiber is sufficient. These cables are typically 900 µm tight-buffered fibers surrounded by aramid yarn strength members for mechanical durability and an outer jacket that can be flame-retardant or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) for safety in indoor environments. The reel packaging allows for easy handling, storage, and deployment, reducing setup time and minimizing fiber damage during installation.

Construction

Core Fiber: Single-mode or multimode fiber, often 9/125 µm for single-mode applications. Buffer: 900 µm tight or semi-tight buffer for protection and flexibility. Strength Members: Aramid yarn or dielectric materials to provide tensile strength and prevent fiber breakage.

Outer Jacket: Flame-retardant or LSZH materials to meet safety standards like NEC Article 770, and to reduce smoke and toxic fumes in case of fire.

Packaging and Deployment

Single reel optical cables are supplied in compact reels or payout boxes such as Corning's Reel in a Box or OCC's OptiReel. These systems: Allow quick cable pulls through ducts, walls, and ceilings. Include length markings to track remaining cable.

Feature ergonomic designs with handles, low weight, and smooth rotary mechanisms to prevent kinks and micro-bends. Support short or long runs, making them ideal for data centers, FTTH networks, and wireless projects.

Applications

Indoor Network Installations: Offices, data centers, and telecom rooms.

FTT

H Deployments: Single-fiber connections to homes or small businesses. Wireless Projects: Connecting small cells or access points. Measurement and Testing: Coiled assemblies for patch cord testing or connector crimping.

Advantages

Ease of Handling: Pre-wound reels reduce tangling and fiber stress. Safety: LSZH or flame-retardant jackets protect personnel and equipment. Efficiency: Quick deployment and minimal setup time.

Versatility: Suitable for both simplex and duplex configurations, indoor or ducted installations. Single reel optical cables provide a reliable, safe, and efficient solution for modern fiber optic networks, combining high-quality fiber construction with user-friendly deployment features.
