New Photovoltaic Silicon Refining Technology

Emerging silicon refining technologies focus on energy-efficient purification, kerf recycling, and innovative chemical and metallurgical processes to produce high-purity solar-grade silicon.

Advanced Purification Methods

Traditional silicon purification relies on high-temperature thermochemical processes such as vacuum refining, slag refining, solvent refining, and gas-phase treatments to remove metallic and non-metallic impurities like boron, phosphorus, and carbon residues. Recent innovations integrate kinetic modeling of impurity removal with engineered sorbents or solvent metals, enabling solar-grade purity with lower energy input and reduced chemical waste. Techniques such as magnesium alloying followed by acid leaching have been shown to reduce phosphorus impurities from tens of parts per million to sub-ppm levels, improving the quality of metallurgical-grade silicon for photovoltaic use (Nature Index).

Silicon Kerf and Waste Recycling

Silicon kerf, a by-product of wafer slicing, accounts for up to 40% of silicon losses. New approaches use thermogravimetric analysis to optimize carbon removal through controlled thermal and oxidative treatments, allowing kerf waste to be recycled into high-purity silicon feedstock. Projects like ICARUS are developing industrial pilot technologies to recover silicon from kerf, graphite, and silica waste.

Recovered silicon can be processed into cold granules or hot granules, or converted into green hydrogen, silicate, and silica via low-cost chemical reactions with sodium hydroxide under controlled conditions (SINTEF). Industrial Pilot and Sustainable ProcessesICARUS also explores carbothermic reduction of quartz using recycled graphite and silica waste to produce metallurgical-grade silicon, which is then refined to solar-grade. This approach reduces reliance on primary raw materials and enhances sustainability.

Other emerging technologies focus on reducing energy consumption during ingot slicing, producing thin, high-precision wafers, and minimizing optical and electrical losses in cells (MDPI). Integration with Advanced PV Cell TechnologiesRefined silicon is increasingly used in n-type wafers, silicon heterojunction (SHJ) cells, tunnel-oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) cells, and interdigitated back contact (IBC) cells, which offer higher efficiencies and longer lifetimes. These advancements are coupled with half-cut, third-cut, bifacial, and shingled cell designs, as well as gallium doping to replace boron, further improving performance and sustainability (DOE, MDPI).

Summary

New photovoltaic silicon refining technologies emphasize: Energy-efficient impurity removal using chemical and metallurgical innovations. Recycling of silicon kerf and industrial waste into high-purity feedstock. Sustainable industrial processes that reduce raw material consumption and environmental impact.
