Optical modules or electrical modules

Electrical modules handle direct electrical signal transmission, while optical modules convert electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa for fiber-optic communication.

Optical Modules

An optical module, also called an optical transceiver, is a device used in high-bandwidth data communications to convert electrical signals into optical signals and back. It operates at the physical layer of the OSI model and is essential in fiber-optic communication systems. The module typically consists of: Optical transmitter (TOSA): Contains a laser diode or LED to emit modulated optical signals.

Optical receiver (ROSA): Contains a photodetector to convert incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. Functional circuits: Driver and preamplifier circuits to process signals. Optical and electrical interfaces: Connect the module to the system and fiber network.

Optical modules are often hot-pluggable and come in various form factors such as SFP, SFP+, QSFP+, and QSFP28, which differ in size, speed, and channel count. They are widely used in Ethernet, data centers, and high-speed networking.

Electrical Modules

An electrical module or electrical interface module transmits signals purely in electrical form. It can be active or passive, connecting devices through copper cables or backplanes without converting signals to optical form. Electrical modules are simpler in design compared to optical modules and are typically used for shorter distances where fiber optics are unnecessary.
