Fiber optic patch cord shielding type

Fiber optic patch cords use different jacket and shielding types such as PVC, LSZH, and OFNP to provide mechanical protection, fire resistance, and low smoke emission depending on the installation environment. Common Shielding and Jacket Types1.

PV

C (Polyvinyl Chloride)Standard indoor use. Provides basic mechanical protection. Flexible and cost-effective.

Not suitable for air ducts or plenum spaces due to lower fire resistance. 2.

LSZ

H (Low Smoke Zero Halogen)Emits minimal smoke and toxic gases when burned. Suitable for public areas, offices, and high-safety environments. More rigid than PVC due to flame-retardant additives.

Common in Europe and areas with strict fire safety regulations. 3.

OFN

P (Optical Fiber Non-conductive Plenum)Highest fire rating among patch cords. Designed for installation in plenum spaces (air handling spaces above ceilings or below floors). Provides excellent fire resistance and low smoke emission.

Recommended for ducts, plenums, and critical infrastructure installations.

Additional Considerations

Simplex vs Duplex: Simplex cords have one fiber and one connector, while duplex cords have two fibers and connectors for bidirectional data transmission. Shielding type applies to both configurations. Indoor vs Outdoor: Outdoor-rated cords may include additional UV or water-resistant jackets, but indoor cords typically rely on PVC, LSZH, or OFNP for protection.

Kevlar Reinforcement: Many patch cords include aramid yarn (Kevlar) under the jacket for tensile strength, which complements the jacket shielding but does not replace fire or smoke protection.

Summary

Choosing the right shielding type depends on the installation environment: PVC for standard indoor wiring.

LSZ

H for public or high-safety areas.

OFN

P for plenum spaces and ducts. Always ensure the patch cord's jacket type and fire rating comply with local building codes and safety standards to maintain network reliability and safety.
