Requirements for the protective panels of secondary distribution boxes

Protective panels for secondary distribution boxes must ensure safety, accessibility, fault protection, and compliance with relevant electrical codes and standards. Key Design and Safety Requirements1. Enclosure and Accessibility Secondary distribution panels must be housed in enclosures that provide full protection against accidental contact with live parts.

The enclosure should allow the panel door to open at least 90° and provide a clear working space in front of the panel: minimum 30 inches wide, 36 inches deep, and 6. 5 feet high, as per NEC 110. 26.

Panels should be mounted at a height not exceeding 6 ft 7 in (2 meters) to ensure safe operation and maintenance. 2. Electrical Protection and Segregation Panels must include overcurrent protective devices (breakers or fuses) for each secondary circuit.

Busbars and internal components should be sized for continuous load plus future expansion, and designed to withstand prospective short-circuit currents. Internal segregation (Forms 1–4b) reduces arc-flash risk and allows selective maintenance without de-energizing the entire panel. 3.

Environmental and Mechanical Considerations Enclosures should meet IP or NEMA ratings appropriate for the installation environment, including dust, moisture, and outdoor exposure. Panels must be mechanically robust to support internal components and prevent deformation or accidental contact. 4.

Redundancy and Reliability For critical systems, such as substation secondary equipment, redundant DC supplies and physically separated relay groups are recommended to maintain operation during AC faults or maintenance. Batteries and chargers should be located to minimize cable lengths and reduce maintenance complexity, with hydrogen-releasing batteries housed in separate ventilated rooms for safety. 5.

Installation and Maintenance Considerations Panels should be installed in readily accessible areas with no obstructions, and dedicated space must be maintained from the floor to at least 6 ft (1. 8 m) for safe operation. Cabling from CTs and VTs to the panel must be carefully routed to limit lead burdens and ensure correct functioning of protective relays.

Factory acceptance tests (FAT) including dielectric, short-circuit, and IP sealing verification are recommended for compliance and reliability. 6. Compliance with Standards Panels must comply with national and international standards such as NEC, IEC, UL, and NEMA, depending on the location and application.

This ensures proper labeling, protection, and operational safety.

Summary

Protective panels for secondary distribution boxes are designed to safeguard personnel, ensure reliable operation, and facilitate maintenance. Key requirements include proper enclosure, accessibility, overcurrent protection, internal segregation, environmental protection, redundancy, and adherence to relevant codes and standards. For substation applications, additional considerations include DC system reliability, physical separation of relay groups, and safe battery placement to prevent common-mode failures or fire hazards.
