How to configure the cable type for vibration optical cables

A vibrating optical cable system is configured by carefully installing the sensing fiber along the perimeter, securing it properly, and connecting it to the interrogator while managing optical losses and sensor settings. Installation of the Optical Cable1. Choose the installation method: Fence-mounted installation is suitable for metal mesh, iron, or welded fences.

The cable should follow the fence line closely to capture vibrations effectively. Buried installation is used for high-security or concealed applications, placing the fiber underground with protective layers to prevent tampering or damage. 2.

Cable routing and fixing: Use cable ties to secure the fiber at intervals of 15–30 cm to prevent movement from wind or environmental vibrations. Two common routing patterns are straight-line (simple, stable fences) and wave-type (increases contact coverage and sensitivity),. Reserve extra fiber length at splices and connectors, and protect fiber ends in splice boxes.

3. Handling precautions: Avoid exceeding the minimum bend radius, twisting, squeezing, or pinching the fiber to prevent attenuation or permanent damage. Never pull on connectors; use proper pulling techniques to maintain fiber integrity.

Sensor and System Configuration1. Sensor selection: Choose sensors compatible with the environment (laboratory, outdoor, offshore, or high voltage). Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors allow multiplexing multiple sensors on a single fiber without signal overlap.

2. Wavelength and optical loss management: Ensure that sensor wavelengths do not overlap and that optical losses from cable length or connections remain within acceptable limits. Fusion splices or pre-assembled arrays can be used to connect sensors permanently while minimizing signal loss.

3. Interrogator connection: Connect the fiber to the interrogator's optical channel, ensuring proper alignment and signal integrity. Amplifiers like EDFA or Raman modules may be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for long-distance monitoring.

4. Calibration and testing: After installation, test the system to verify that vibrations are detected accurately along the entire fiber length. Adjust sensor sensitivity and check for false positives, especially in environments with wind, rain, or other background vibrations.

Maintenance and Environmental Considerations

The system is resistant to electromagnetic interference and harsh weather, but regular inspection ensures long-term reliability. Protect connectors and splices from contamination and mechanical stress to maintain stable performance. By following these steps, a vibrating optical cable system can be effectively installed and configured to provide continuous, real-time vibration monitoring for perimeter security, industrial monitoring, or infrastructure protection.
