Distribution boxes and sub-distribution boxes

Sub-boxes and distribution boxes are essential electrical enclosures that safely distribute power from a main source to multiple circuits, providing protection and control for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

Overview

A distribution box, also called a distribution board, panelboard, or fuse box, is a protective enclosure that receives a high-amperage power feed and divides it into multiple lower-amperage circuits. Each circuit is protected by a fuse or circuit breaker, which prevents overcurrent, short circuits, and potential fire hazards, ensuring safe and reliable power distribution. A sub-box, or sub-distribution board (SDB), is a secondary distribution unit that receives power from the main distribution board (MDB) and distributes it to specific areas or equipment, such as garages, parking lots, or individual floors in a building.

Sub-boxes allow localized control and protection, making it easier to manage multiple circuits independently.

Types of Distribution Boxes

Main Distribution Board (MDB): The primary control panel for an entire building or facility. It receives the main power supply and distributes it to sub-distribution boards and major loads.

MD

Bs typically include the main breaker, busbars, and outgoing feeders. Sub Distribution Board (SDB): Transfers electricity from the MDB to specific locations. It often contains circuit breakers, fuses, and safety devices to protect individual circuits.

Meter Panel: Houses electrical meters to monitor power consumption for residential or commercial units. It includes primary switches, fuses, and RCDs for safety. Panel Fuse Bank: Provides overcurrent protection and acts as a load center, commonly used in solar power systems or older electrical setups.

Consumer Unit: A compact distribution box for residential use, often including RCDs and circuit breakers to protect household circuits. Enclosed Switchgear and Transfer Switches: Used in industrial or critical facilities to manage power distribution and provide backup power switching.

Key Features and Benefits

Safety: Protects circuits from overloads and short circuits using fuses, MCCBs, or RCDs. Control: Allows independent management of different circuits or areas. Flexibility: Available in various sizes and configurations for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

Standardization: In some regions, like Germany, distribution boxes follow standards such as DIN 43 880.

Applications

Residential: Breaker boxes, meter panels, and consumer units for homes and apartments. Commercial: Standard circuit breaker panels, sub-distribution boards for offices, shops, and multi-tenant buildings. Industrial: Medium voltage panels, control panels, and junction boxes for factories, plants, and infrastructure projects.

Infrastructure & Utilities: Outdoor joint boxes, underground distribution boxes, and specialized enclosures for telecom, renewable energy, and public utilities. Understanding the differences between main distribution boards, sub-boxes, and other distribution enclosures is crucial for designing safe, efficient, and reliable electrical systems across all types of buildings and facilities.
