Laboratory Fiber Optic Sensors

Laboratory fiber optic sensors are advanced measurement tools used to monitor strain, temperature, pressure, and chemical properties with high precision and spatial resolution.

Overview

Fiber optic sensors in laboratories are employed where traditional electrical sensors may be inadequate due to electromagnetic interference, high voltages, or the need for distributed measurements over long distances. They are widely used in research, civil engineering, aerospace, medical, and energy applications. These sensors convert physical or chemical changes into optical signals, which are then analyzed using specialized interrogators.

Key Technologies

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors: Measure local strain and temperature by detecting shifts in the reflected wavelength of light.

FB

Gs can be multiplexed to monitor multiple points simultaneously, making them ideal for structural health monitoring. Optical Backscatter Reflectometry (OBR): Provides distributed strain and temperature measurements along the entire fiber length with millimeter-scale spatial resolution. Useful for continuous monitoring of long structures.

Fabry-

Perot (FP) Interferometric Sensors: Utilize interference patterns to measure pressure, strain, or displacement with high sensitivity. Brillouin and Raman Sensors: Measure distributed strain and temperature using backscattered light, often applied in geotechnical and civil engineering experiments.

Laboratory Applications

Laboratory fiber optic sensors are used for: Structural Testing: Monitoring load–displacement behavior in experimental foundations or beams using distributed strain sensors.

High-

Frequency Impact Studies: FBG sensors combined with Linear Attenuating Filter (LAF) technology capture rapid dynamic events. Environmental and Chemical Sensing: Fiber-optic oxygen sensors and other chemical probes allow contactless measurements in closed containers or flow-through systems. Critical Monitoring: Detecting vibrations, temperature changes, liquid or gas leaks, and structural health in bridges, tunnels, and pipelines.

Instrumentation and Calibration

Laboratory setups typically include: Interrogators: Devices like DTSS or DSTS record Brillouin or FBG signals, converting optical data into strain or temperature measurements with high spatial resolution. Calibration Methods: Optical fibers, even those designed for telecommunications, can be calibrated for laboratory measurements, allowing flexibility in sensor selection. Signal Conditioning: Ensures accurate data acquisition and processing, often integrating multiple sensor types for comprehensive monitoring.

Advantages

High sensitivity and accuracyImmunity to electromagnetic interferenceCapability for distributed measurements over long distancesSmall sensor size suitable for confined or hazardous environmentsMultiplexing capability for monitoring multiple points simultaneously Laboratory fiber optic sensors represent a versatile and precise solution for experimental research, structural monitoring, and advanced sensing applications, providing both local and distributed measurements with minimal interference and high reliability.
