Hydrogen energy is emerging as a key pillar of the global clean energy transition, with rapid growth in production, investment, and industrial applications.

Overview of Hydrogen Energy

Hydrogen energy refers to the use of hydrogen as a clean, versatile energy carrier capable of storing, transporting, and delivering energy from diverse sources such as water, fossil fuels, or biomass to power vehicles, generate electricity, and heat buildings. Hydrogen can be combusted directly, producing only water vapor, or used in fuel cells to generate low-emission electricity. Its high gravimetric energy density makes it ideal for sectors that are difficult to electrify, including heavy industry, long-distance transport, shipping, and aviation.

Production Methods

Hydrogen is primarily produced through: Steam Methane Reforming (SMR): The dominant method, which generates CO₂. Electrolysis: Splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, especially effective when powered by renewable energy, producing emission-free “green” hydrogen. Emerging methods: Photoelectrolysis, biomass gasification, thermochemical processes, and microwave plasma pyrolysis are being piloted to improve efficiency and sustainability.

Electrolysis is expected to dominate future investments, particularly in China and Europe, while the U. S. focuses more on CCUS-equipped hydrogen production.

Investment and Market Trends

Global capital spending on low-emissions hydrogen projects reached USD 4. 3 billion in 2024, with projections to nearly USD 8 billion in 2025, reflecting an 80% increase. Over 50% of this investment targets hydrogen use in oil refining and industrial facilities.

Despite strong investment growth, venture capital fundraising for hydrogen fell by one-third in 2024, and publicly traded hydrogen companies have experienced lower returns. Governments in Europe, Asia, and North America are supporting hydrogen through national strategies, subsidies, and pilot projects.

Industrial Applications

Hydrogen is increasingly used in: Heavy industry: Steel, cement, and chemical sectors for decarbonization. Energy storage and grid stabilization: Hydrogen can store excess renewable energy and provide dispatchable power. Mobility: Fuel cell vehicles, shipping, and aviation.

Power-to-

X applications: Conversion of hydrogen into ammonia, synthetic fuels, or other chemicals for energy storage and transport.

Technological Innovations

Recent advancements include: Industrial-scale ammonia crackers and hydrogen storage in salt caverns and depleted gas fields. Development of alkaline, PEM, and solid oxide electrolyzers, with costs decreasing due to technological improvements and economies of scale. Integration with digital technologies and AI to optimize production, storage, and distribution, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs.

Outlook

The International Energy Agency projects that green hydrogen production could grow more than 20-fold by 2030 if supportive policies and investments continue, potentially supplying 10–25% of global energy demand. Renewable hydrogen is expected to reach cost parity with conventional hydrogen by 2030, driven by falling renewable energy prices and technological advancements. While challenges remain in storage, transport, and infrastructure, hydrogen is poised to become a mainstream energy source, particularly in hard-to-electrify sectors and industrial decarbonization.

Hydrogen energy represents a transformative opportunity in the new energy landscape, combining environmental benefits with industrial versatility and strategic investment potential.
