Branch Cable Tray Installation

Proper cable tray branch installation ensures safe, organized, and code-compliant routing from a main tray to secondary equipment or devices.

Planning and Preparation

Before installing a branch, review the approved cable tray layout drawings and ensure they are labeled “Issued for Construction” (IFC). Identify the branch location, avoiding interference with structural elements, HVAC systems, or other utilities. Conduct a risk assessment and ensure all personnel wear appropriate PPE, including helmets, gloves, and safety shoes.

Verify whether hot work or Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) permits are required near energized systems.

Selecting Materials and Tray Type

Choose a tray type suitable for the branch application: Ladder trays: Ideal for airflow and heavy cables. Perforated trays: Suitable for lighter loads. Solid-bottom trays: Protect against dust or EMI.

Ensure all trays, connectors, supports, and accessories are free from damage and appropriate for the environment (e.g., stainless steel for corrosive areas, galvanized steel for standard conditions).

Installation Procedure

Mark the Branch Route: Extend the branch from the main tray to the equipment, maintaining proper bend radius for cables exiting the tray. Install Supports: Use brackets or hangers spaced according to tray type and load, typically 1. 5 to 3 meters apart.

Ensure the branch is level and aligned with the main tray. Connect to Main Tray: Use approved fittings such as tees, elbows, or reducers to join the branch to the main tray. Secure with bolts or clamps as specified in the design.

Cable Laying: Place cables carefully, maintaining separation to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) and respecting minimum bend radii. Grounding and Bonding: Ensure the branch tray is properly grounded to prevent electrical hazards. Inspection and Testing: Verify alignment, support spacing, and secure connections.

Check for compliance with IEC 60364, IEEE, or other applicable standards.

Documentation and Quality Assurance

Label each branch with feeder name and branch number. Maintain records of inspections, material verification, and installation checks to ensure traceability and compliance. Conduct a final inspection to confirm the branch installation meets safety, structural, and electrical requirements.

By following these steps, a cable tray branch can be installed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards, ensuring reliable cable management and long-term system performance.
