Distribution box circuit breakers and switches

Distribution boxes house circuit breakers and switches that safely manage and protect electrical circuits by controlling power flow and preventing overloads or short circuits.

Overview of Distribution Boxes

A distribution box (DB box), also known as a distribution board, panelboard, or breaker box, is a central hub that receives electrical power from the main supply and distributes it to multiple circuits within a building. It ensures that electricity is delivered safely and efficiently to lighting, outlets, appliances, and industrial equipment. The enclosure protects users from accidental contact with live parts and organizes the electrical system for easier maintenance.

Key Components

Main Switch / Main Breaker: Controls the entire electrical supply to the distribution box. It allows complete disconnection of power during emergencies or maintenance and is rated for the maximum current capacity of the service. Circuit Breakers: Automatic switches that protect individual circuits from overcurrent, short circuits, or ground faults.

When abnormal current is detected, the breaker trips, cutting off power to prevent fires, equipment damage, or injury. Modern breakers can be reset manually after resolving the issue. Residual Current Devices (RCDs) / RCBOs: Protect against earth leakage currents, reducing the risk of electric shock.

RCB

Os combine overcurrent protection with residual current protection in a single device. Busbars: Metal strips that distribute current from the main switch to individual breakers. They provide secure connection points for all circuits and ensure reliable power distribution.

Neutral and Earth Bars: Provide connection points for neutral and grounding wires, ensuring proper circuit completion and safety. Protective Enclosure: Made from durable materials like steel or reinforced plastic, it prevents accidental contact with live components and may include doors or covers for added safety.

Types of Distribution Boxes

Main Distribution Board (MDB): Primary control panel for an entire building, handling high-voltage, high-amperage supply and distributing it to sub-distribution boards. Sub Distribution Board (SDB): Receives power from the MDB and distributes it to specific areas or equipment. Consumer Unit: Common in residential installations, often includes RCDs and standard circuit breakers.

Enclosed Switchgear and Transfer Switches: Used in commercial or industrial settings for specialized control and backup power management.

Function of Circuit Breakers and Switches

Circuit breakers and switches in a distribution box serve to: Protect circuits from overloads and short circuits. Control power flow to different areas or devices. Enable safe maintenance by isolating circuits.

Monitor electrical load in modern smart DB boxes with energy monitoring units.

Summary

Distribution boxes are essential for safe and organized electrical power management. Circuit breakers, main switches, and protective devices work together to prevent electrical hazards, ensure reliable power distribution, and allow efficient maintenance. Choosing the right type of distribution box and properly rated breakers is critical for both residential and commercial installations.

On each side of the panel are two busbars, for neutral and earth. The incoming neutral connects to the lower busbar on the right side of the panel, which is in turn connected to the neutral busbar at the top left. The incoming earth wire conne
