Principle of Cambodian Single-Mode Well Logging Optical Cable

The Cambodian single-mode well logging optical cable operates by using fiber-optic sensing to measure distributed temperature and acoustic signals along the wellbore, enabling real-time monitoring of well integrity and flow dynamics.

Core Principle

The cable relies on single-mode optical fibers embedded within a robust armored structure to transmit light signals along the wellbore. Two primary sensing mechanisms are employed: Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS): Uses Raman scattering to measure temperature variations along the fiber. A laser pulse is sent down the fiber, and the backscattered light is analyzed to determine temperature changes along the wellbore, allowing detection of fluid migration, leaks, or thermal anomalies in real time (Silixa, 2022).

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS): Uses Rayleigh scattering to detect acoustic vibrations along the fiber. Backscattered light caused by vibrations is analyzed to locate leaks, monitor cement integrity, and identify mechanical issues within the well (Johannessen et al., 2012).

Structural Design

The cable is designed for high durability and reliability under harsh downhole conditions: Fiber-in-Metal Tube (FIMT): Optical fibers are housed in a hermetically sealed stainless steel or INCONEL tube, protecting against pressure, temperature, and chemical exposure (SLB). Armoring Layers: The FIMT is surrounded by layers of zinc-coated wires and polymer belts, providing mechanical buffering, corrosion resistance, and tensile strength (CN110331974A). Encapsulation: The outermost layer shields the cable during deployment and operation, ensuring strain-free fiber performance and minimizing optical degradation (SLB).

Sensing Implementation

The cable can be deployed in multiple configurations depending on monitoring requirements: Inside tubing: Retrievable and cost-effective, suitable for intervention-based monitoring. Clamped outside tubing or screens: Provides permanent monitoring but requires wet-connects for multistage completions. Permanent installation behind casing: Ensures long-term monitoring, including post-abandonment surveillance of wells (Henninges et al., 2017).

AdvantagesHigh-resolution, real-time monitoring of temperature and acoustic signals along the entire wellbore. Accurate positioning of anomalies using weak fiber Bragg grating arrays for both temperature and vibration sensing (CN110331974A). Robust mechanical and thermal resistance, enabling operation in high-pressure, high-temperature, and corrosive environments.

Integration with cloud or web platforms for immediate analysis and actionable insights (SLB). In summary, the Cambodian single-mode well logging optical cable combines advanced fiber-optic sensing, durable armored construction, and flexible deployment options to provide comprehensive, real-time monitoring of well conditions, significantly improving diagnostic accuracy and operational safety.

Unlike multi-mode optical fiber, single-mode fiber does not exhibit modal dispersion. This is due to the fiber having such a small cross section that only the first mode is transported.
